Ah yes, tomorrow embarks the last week of school for me, riveting! But of course, every college semester's end is sealed with finals, thankfully I have but one, everything else is either a project of paper. Yesterday I attended a White Elephant exchange, boy were my gifts ridiculous. First off one such particular gift was a classic, and literally I mean a classic! I was milling around the Salvation Army and encountered a full multi-colored set of floppy discs, with colors ranging from translucent pink to orange. A special find I must say. But if it wasn't my very own disc special that revitalized its recipient, my next gift surely executed a job well done. I found what an artist would say, "a special piece" and really just the thought makes me chuckle. This gift was a ceramic vase painted similar to a color scheme of your typical 1960's mod party or a 1980's party. In either case, think bold, harsh colors that frantically clash. If it's not the colors that turn you away in fear, it's the random paintings of something that hints at a tree, as well as the transfigured flames at the rim of the vase. As an artist, one believes the universal theory that someone who formulates the effort to produce a piece is worth the recognition, I would like to feel the same way regarding this vase. Everyone else at the party failed at sharing a mutual feeling. Oh and let it be known, that this vase was entitled "Forest Afire--Forest"appropriate no doubt, which to my dismay someone had swiped my gift more than once so that in and of itself speaks volumes, right? Anyway, all and all last evening was a blast with delicious snacks and Christmas merriment.
P.S. If you're thinking I'm pretty cold for being so critical about the vase, allow me to put things into perspective. This piece was most likely a school project (perhaps from SDSU's finest seeing as how it's in the area) and after a long and thoughtful deliberation, I'm sure the vase needed to retire. So what better than at a thrift store sold at a bargain price for others to enjoy? C'mon people, if this vase was so astonishing, you wouldn't find it at the Salvation Army, no, the artist would pridefully keep it!
I bid you adieu.
